Teacher Leadership Opportunity

The GEODE Initiative at Northwestern University is recruiting educators to become Toyota Teacher Leaders in Environmental Science. Teacher Leaders are visionaries in environmental science education, with a track record of assisting other teachers in improving the science instruction in their classrooms. These leaders will support the nationwide roll out of Looking at the Environment, a new research-based environmental science curriculum for high school that incorporates technology to support investigations with data. Looking at the Environment is scheduled for publication in 2004.

Toyota Teacher Leaders will be selected through an application process, based on teaching and leadership experience, and geographic diversity. Teacher Leaders will receive: materials, software, and professional development; the opportunity to collaborate with peers around the country; and the opportunity to work closely with Northwestern University researchers in the development and evaluation of a modern, innovative environmental science curricula.

Selected Toyota Teacher Leaders will attend a one-week summer workshop tentatively scheduled for the week of July 21, 2003. At that workshop, they will be introduced to Looking at the Environment, its pedagogical approach, and the technologies that it incorporates. Travel expenses and a $500 stipend will be provided for the workshop. During the 2003-4 school year they will implement the curriculum in their classroom or support one or more teachers in their school district who will be implementing it. In subsequent years, they will serve as national, regional, or local resources for environmental science education reform by supporting teachers implementing Looking at the Environment, facilitating an online professional community, and/or offering professional development workshops in a variety of settings.

In exchange for a school year stipend of $1000, Teacher Leaders will be expected to spend at least forty hours during the 2003-4 school year doing some combination of leading professional development, supporting other teachers, or developing materials for the Looking at the Environment project.

Ideally, Toyota Teacher Leaders will:

  • Be experienced teachers of environmental science or a closely related subject.

  • Be committed to inquiry-based science teaching and comfortable with the use of technology.

  • Have experience assisting teachers with implementation of new curricula.

  • Be comfortable leading professional development

  • Be prepared to develop a plan for conducting professional development and support for a local, regional, or national community of environmental science teachers.

  • Administrators, department chairs, and other school district personal with responsibility for supporting and improving science instruction.

  • Retired teachers or free-lance professional developers who are interested in staying involved in improving science education.
